October 4, 2024
Dear Shaler Area Families,
As we transition into October, the excitement for the fall season is in the air! October brings a renewed sense of energy as we continue moving forward in the school year. I want to take a moment to share some important updates and celebrate the incredible achievements of our students and staff.
- PMEA Women’s Choir Honors: It is with immense pride and excitement that we share the incredible news that our Honors Women’s Chorus has been selected to perform at the prestigious Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) conference. This is not only a tremendous honor for our students but a defining moment that truly puts our music program on the map.Our ensemble was chosen from over 75 groups across Pennsylvania through an extremely rigorous selection process. A distinguished panel of respected music educators, professors, and PMEA state board members evaluated each submission, and it is a remarkable achievement to have our chorus stand out in such a competitive field. Congratulations to our students and music staff for this landmark accomplishment!
- Marzolf Primary School Recognition: We are thrilled to announce that Marzolf Primary School has been ranked #2 in the 2025 Niche Standout Elementary Schools in Pittsburgh! This is an incredible achievement for our school community, and we couldn’t be prouder of the dedication and commitment from our staff, students, and families. This recognition truly reflects the hard work and excellence we strive for every day at Marzolf Primary!
- North Pittsburgh College Fair: LaRoche University will host the North Pittsburgh College Fair on October 7th from 6:00-8:00 PM at the LRU Kerr Fitness and Sports Center. There is free parking on-site for the college fair. Students will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from 140+ colleges and universities, learn about different campuses, and identify schools that offer their major. Information has been posted on the Counseling Office Google Classroom, and you can view flyers in the counseling office for more details.
- Planning Ahead: Please remember that there will be no school on October 14 due to a scheduled teacher in-service day. This long weekend offers a great opportunity for family time or relaxation.
- Transportation and Road Construction Update: Drainage work will take place between Duncan Ave. and William Flynn Highway, followed by paving from October 7-9. Work on Pine Creek Bridge and the intersection of Mt. Royal Blvd. and Vilsack Rd. will also happen during this time, and milling between Wetzel Rd and Dehaven Rd. is scheduled for October 14-16. Please plan for possible delays and give yourself extra time for school drop-offs and pick-ups.
- SchoolCafe Reminder: If you haven’t already, please visit SchoolCafe to manage your child’s meal account, make payments, and apply for Free & Reduced Lunch. Staying up to date on your child’s account ensures they are prepared for their school day.
- Support for Students: If you feel your child may need additional support—whether academically, socially, or emotionally—please reach out to their school counselor, teacher, principal, or any of our support services. We are here to ensure every student has what they need to succeed.
Thank you for your continued support and for being an active part of the Shaler Area community. We look forward to another great week ahead!
Warm regards,
Bryan E. O’Black, Ed.D.
