Shaler Area Students Take on Global Challenges at Model UN Conference

Shaler Area High School students recently stepped onto the world stage, at least for a day, as they took part in a Model United Nations Conference at Riverview Junior Senior High School.

Model UN invites students to step into the role of international diplomats, researching the positions of their assigned nations and working alongside peers from other schools to debate and resolve real-world issues. Shaler Area’s delegation represented three countries, the United States, Japan, and South Africa, each bringing its own perspective, priorities, and policy goals to the table.

The issues before the delegates were as complex as they were timely. Students tackled topics ranging from the global effects of human trafficking to strategies for reopening and mitigating the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for international trade and energy. Addressing questions like these required students to think critically, understand multiple viewpoints, and craft thoughtful solutions while representing nations whose interests did not always align.

Experiences like Model UN help students build skills that reach far beyond the classroom. Through careful research, persuasive public speaking, negotiation, and collaboration, participants strengthen their ability to communicate clearly, listen respectfully, and work toward common ground. These are the same durable skills that colleges and employers value most, and they prepare students to become informed, engaged citizens in an increasingly connected world.

The Model UN program is guided by Christina Palladino, a teacher in Shaler Area’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Department, whose leadership helps students explore global issues in meaningful, hands-on ways.

Congratulations to each of our student delegates for representing their assigned nations, and Shaler Area, with thoughtfulness and poise. Thank you as well to Riverview Junior Senior High School for hosting the conference and to everyone who continues to support this program.
