Dear Shaler Area Families,
Each week in Shaler Area brings new reasons to be proud of our students, staff, and community. As we reflect on the past several days, I am excited to share five stories that illustrate the creativity, hard work, and Titan pride that define our district.
One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been the opportunity to meet with our incredible students and learn more about their experiences in our schools. Hearing first hand about their passions, challenges, and aspirations reminds me daily of why we are all here – to support and uplift our students in every way possible. Their insights, creativity, and perspectives continue to shape our efforts to create an enriching and inclusive environment for all
These moments are reminders of how, together, we continue to build opportunities that Engage, Empower, and Excel for every learner.
Student Spotlight: Student Spotlight: Kinley Bejarano
Congratulations to Shaler Area High School senior Kinley Bejarano, who was sworn in by Mayor Robert Tuñón on September 15 as a junior member of council for the 2026-2027 school year. Kinley was inspired to serve after hearing local mayors speak in her civics and government class last year, and she wanted to take an active role in what was happening around her. Her goal, in her words, is to “have a voice in my community.” Kinley, we are proud of your leadership and your commitment to civic engagement, and we look forward to seeing all you accomplish this year.
Staff Spotlight: Dave Spell
Our educators are constantly integrating thought-provoking activities for students. Earlier this year, Dave Spell, teacher at Shaler Area Middle School, visited the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon in Charleston, South Carolina, where delegates from South Carolina signed the Declaration of Independence and ratified the United States Constitution. Guests to the site have the opportunity to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence, powerfully connecting them to the historical event and their own participation in democracy. Drawing on this experience, Mr. Spell provided his students with their own constitution on the wall of the classroom to sign on Constitution Day. Thank you, Mr. Spell, for creatively engaging our students with the concepts they are learning.
