Mark Reardon of Communitopia recently reached out to Shlaer Area teachers Ms. Nilson and Ms. Leung offering a free field trip for Shaler Area High School students, covering both student fees and transportation by bus. This is the latest of an ongoing relationship with Communitopia that has benefited students. Students participated in real-world citizen science research collecting water, air, and macroinvertebrate samples as part of a study on North Park Lake. Students also learned how to geocache and worked through six different stations. At each station they learned how to use different pieces of scientific equipment to complete various studies of the lake ecosystem. Sixteen students from a wide range of science courses enjoyed the hands-on day of science.
