Alex Cangilla is a student at Shaler Area Middle School. Not only is this eighth-grader a stand-out student, known as a a voracious reader, a deep and analytical thinker, and a positive example to his peers in the classroom, he is also leader in his community. Alex is a state champion and black belt in Tae Kwon Do who invests in younger students practicing Tae Kwon Do. Alex is training to to certified to teach at North Hills ATA, where he spends many hours assisting with both the young students and the adults studying the Korean martial art—including many Shaler Area students. Alex, your dedication, discipline, and generosity are an inspiration.
Staff Spotlight: Carrie Miller
Mrs. Miller, School Counselor at Reserve Primary, brings warmth, genuineness, and a deep sense of care and concern to her students. She serves as the coach of the SWPBIS team at Reserve and has been instrumental in its success. One of the ideas that has brought this program to life is the “Parliament Meetings” she developed, centered around Owl behavior expectations. During these parliaments—groups of students, or “owls” come together to participate in activities that strengthen connections and relationships between staff and students at Reserve. Mrs. Miller consistently works to build meaningful relationships and a strong sense of community among both students and staff. She is a wonderful example of the care and dedication that school counselors bring to their schools.
