Take 5 with Dr. O'Black

Dear Shaler Area Families,

With just one week remaining in the school year, the energy across our schools continues to be inspiring. This time of year brings a vibrant blend of celebration, reflection, and anticipation as our students participate in final performances, athletic competitions, award ceremonies, and meaningful end-of-year traditions.

We are incredibly proud of all that our students have accomplished and grateful for the dedication of our educators and staff who have guided them throughout the year. We also want to extend our sincere thanks to our staff and parent volunteers for their tremendous efforts in planning and supporting these special events—they make these memorable experiences possible for our students.  As a reminder, Wednesday May 27 through Friday, May 29 we will operate on Early dismissals for all students.

Congratulations to our Shaler Area Boys Volleyball Team on capturing the WPIAL 2A Championship with an outstanding 3-1 victory over South Fayette! This marks the program’s fourth consecutive WPIAL title and is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes and coaching staff. Titan Nation is incredibly proud of your hard work, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.

We also want to wish the best of luck to our Titan Softball Team as they advance to the WPIAL Championship next week. Your determination and teamwork have made our entire community proud, and we look forward to cheering you on.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support—it plays a vital role in the success of our school community. Let’s finish the year strong as we continue to Engage, Empower, and Excel together.

Shaler Area High School Mock Crash Recap
Earlier today, Shaler Hampton EMS, in collaboration with the Emergency Responder class at Shaler Area High School, hosted a mock car crash event designed to give students a powerful, hands-on learning experience.

The simulation allowed students to apply their training in a realistic emergency scenario while emphasizing the importance of safe decision-making. Special thanks to Shaler Hampton EMS; Cherry City, Bauerstown, and Undercliff Fire Companies; the Shaler, Millvale, and Etna Police Departments; Life Flight; the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office; and Perman Funeral Home for their invaluable support and partnership in making this educational opportunity possible for our students.

143 Day of Kindness
The 5th Annual 143 Day of Kindness was a wonderful celebration of compassion and community spirit. Held at Shaler Area Elementary School yesterday, the event featured engaging activities such as kindness rock painting, recycled crafts, yoga, and a community mural—all designed to inspire and promote kindness throughout our district.

We extend our sincere thanks to our dedicated staff and community partners who helped make this event a success. Your support and collaboration continue to make Shaler Area a place where kindness truly grows.

Staff Spotlight: Betty Wesolek
This week, we are proud to recognize Betty Wesolek for her incredible dedication and service to the Shaler Area School District as she celebrates her retirement. Most recently serving as the High School Main Office Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Wesolek has supported several buildings throughout her career in a variety of roles, including as a paraprofessional. No matter the position, she has always gone above and beyond for students, staff, families, and anyone who walks through the door. Mrs. Wesolek is known for serving everyone with a smile, maintaining a positive attitude, and always being willing to help wherever needed. Her kindness, professionalism, and steady presence help keep things running smoothly each and every day. Behind the scenes, she manages countless responsibilities with grace, patience, and attention to detail, often without recognition, but never without impact.

As Mrs. Wesolek begins this well-earned retirement, we thank her for the years of dedication, positivity, and unwavering commitment she has given to the Shaler Area community. Her impact will be felt for years to come, and she will be greatly missed. Congratulations and best wishes on your retirement!

Student Spotlight: Annie Johnson
Annie Johnson, a third-grader at Burchfield Primary School, was recently recognized for her compassion and creativity. As a member of the school’s Caring Team, Annie has co-taught grief awareness lessons and participated in charitable initiatives. Annie drew on the lessons she learned through her involvement with this student leadership team and created a submission for Highmark Caring Place’s annual poster contest. Her poster on how to help a grieving friend was selected as the top elementary entry in the region! Annie was recently surprised in class with a certificate and gift celebrating her win. Thank you, Annie, for caring for your peers and supporting children facing grief.
