Pitt Track Team Shares Expertise with Kids of Steel

The Shaler Area Elementary Kids of Steel team welcomed the Pitt Track team to their practice on Wednesday, April 15th. The Pitt student-athletes facilitated a “Track 101” clinic for 4th through 6th grade runners. Shaler’s students learned about the basic track and field techniques and events, hoping to inspire an interest in joining a track team in the future. Exposure to an authentic division I track and field setting highlighted track events, covering the sprints, hurdles, jumps, distance, and throws, which sparked curiosity in the sport amongst the young runners. This opportunity was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the community. The influence of collegiate track athletes from the University of Pittsburgh made a long-lasting impact. The Pitt athletes’ positive example encouraged the youth to continue to adopt an active lifestyle, striving for years of activity that went beyond their Kids of Steel years. They eagerly awaited the visit and we can not thank the University of Pittsburgh Track and Field Hurdles Coach, Elisha Brewer, along with Darryl Weston, director of track and field operations, enough for their collaboration with Ms. Himes and Shaler Area Elementary.
