May 9, 2025
Dear Shaler Area Families,
As we wrap up the first full week of May, the momentum across our schools continues to build. From classroom milestones to community celebrations, it’s inspiring to witness our students finishing the school year with focus, pride, and purpose. This week also brought unexpected challenges, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our families, first responders, and maintenance staff for their incredible support in the aftermath of last week’s storm. Your care, cooperation, and quick response helped ensure the safety and well-being of our school community. Together, we continue to demonstrate the strength and resilience that defines Shaler Area.
Storm-Related School Closures – No Make-Up Days Required
Due to the widespread impact of last Tuesday’s storm, Shaler Area School District was closed from Wednesday, April 30 through Friday, May 2. We want to assure families that these days will not need to be made up. The District has been in direct contact with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), and to avoid changes to the school calendar, we are shifting our compliance from a daily attendance requirement to a total instructional minutes model. Because Shaler Area already exceeds the state’s required instructional minutes, we remain in full compliance and are able to waive these three days.
Possible Transportation Delays
Please be advised that Liberoni, a contractor for PennDOT, began milling work between Irene St and Glenshaw Ave, and between Dehaven St and Duncan Ave this week. Paving work is expected to begin on Monday, May 12.
Work will begin with side street cut-ins during the first few days. Crews are anticipated to move onto Mt. Royal Boulevard by Thursday, May 8.
This roadwork may cause delays to school transportation in the affected areas. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Transportation Department at 412-492-1200, ext. 2824 or email businfo@shalerarea.org.
School Zone Safety Reminder
Please continue to observe posted speed limits in school zones during arrival and dismissal times. Your attentiveness helps keep our students, staff, and community safe. Thank you for your cooperation.
Celebrating Our Educators & School Support Heroes
This week, we proudly celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week, National School Nurse Day, and School Lunch Hero Day—an opportunity to recognize the many dedicated professionals who support the daily well-being and success of our students.
- To our teachers: thank you for inspiring curiosity, nurturing growth, and making a lasting impact on every child you teach.
- To our school nurses: your care, compassion, and expertise are a vital part of keeping our students healthy and supported.
- To our food service team: thank you for fueling learning with nutritious meals and warm smiles each day.
We are deeply grateful for all you do to make Shaler Area a safe, welcoming, and empowering place to learn.

Reserve Primary SWBIS Recognition
We are proud to share that Reserve Primary School has been officially recognized for achieving Tier 1 Sustaining Fidelity through the Pennsylvania Positive Behavior Support (PaPBS) Network. This designation reflects Reserve’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment through the implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS).
Earning this distinction is no small feat—it demonstrates that the Reserve team has not only established strong Tier 1 PBIS systems but has also sustained them with consistency, equity, and impact over time.
