Recap and Reminders for Parents — March 28

March 28, 2025

Dear Shaler Area Families,

As we wrap up the month of March, there’s a renewed sense of pride and energy throughout our district. From academic achievements to artistic performances and athletic competitions, our students continue to exemplify the spirit of excellence that defines Shaler Area. I’m thrilled to share a number of recent highlights and important updates with you.

League of Innovative Schools Visits Shaler Area
On Thursday, Shaler Area had the honor of welcoming members of the League of Innovative Schools to Scott Primary School and Shaler Area Elementary School. Visitors from across the country toured classrooms, observed student-centered learning experiences, and explored how our schools integrate School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBIS), restorative practices, and inclusive learning environments. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we are proud of our staff and students for representing the district with such energy, innovation, and pride.

We are also incredibly proud of several of our Shaler Area Senior High Choir members, who helped welcome superintendents and district leaders from across the country to our region as part of the League of Innovative Schools Spring Convening! Alongside students from the 12 hosting districts, our talented students performed at the Heinz History Center, setting the tone for a powerful few days of learning, collaboration, and innovation. What an amazing way to represent Shaler Area and our community!

Band-O-Rama & All-District Jazz
On Thursday evening, the Shaler Area music department hosted Band-O-Rama & All-District Jazz—a spectacular event showcasing the incredible talents of our elementary, middle, and high school concert bands and jazz bands. The evening was filled with energy, pride, and exceptional performances. A heartfelt thank-you to our dedicated music educators, students, and families for making this event such a powerful celebration of the arts!

Westinghouse Visit Inspires Future Engineers
On Thursday, March 20, about 60 SAMS students visited the Westinghouse facility in Etna, accompanied by Dennis Reagle, Sondra Jodkin, Amanda Grady, and Mike LaGamba. Students explored cutting-edge technology, including a micro nuclear reactor, participated in STEM challenges like marble transport and robot navigation, and engaged in hands-on nuclear science activities using Geiger counters and Cloud Chambers. The visit offered a glimpse into real-world engineering and inspired students to pursue future careers in science and technology.

Shaler Area Vocalist Earns All-State Honors
It is with immense pride and joy that I announce Jordan Fowler (Grade 12) has earned a place among the top vocalists in Pennsylvania! This outstanding achievement means that Shaler Area School District will be represented at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Choral Ensemble—a feat comparable to winning a state championship!

Library Giving Day – Support Wonderbooks
April 1 is Library Giving Day, a one-day national fundraising event encouraging people who value public libraries to support them through donations. This year, Shaler North Hills Library is focusing its efforts on expanding its Wonderbook collection for children. Wonderbooks are print books with built-in audio that allow children to read and listen at the same time—helping build stronger reading and comprehension skills.

All donations made on April 1 will be used to purchase new Wonderbooks, and each donated book will include a bookplate honoring your gift.  To donate, visit tinyurl.com/snhlgivingday2025 or stop by the library to give by check, cash, or credit card.

Last Friday, students in Burchfield Primary School’s Grammar Club took the stage in their very own “Grammys” celebration—Burchfield Grammar at the Grammys! This creative event showcased students’ understanding of grammar concepts through music, performance, and fun. From catchy songs to impressive stage presence, our students brought grammar to life in a way only Burchfield can! A big thank-you to the staff and families who supported this joyful celebration of learning.
