Ms. Ferris’ 3D Arts classes have created a miniature Shaler Wonderland, replicating buildings from Etna, Millvale, Reserve, and Shaler in magical miniature. Their imaginative gingerbread-style creations were displayed in the Middle School lobby.
This collaborative project invited students to study architectural styles and then identify favorite buildings within our own communities of Etna, Millvale, Reserve, and Shaler to inspire their creation. Students first developed skills to manipulate cardboard into buildings. Next, students painted their buildings to look like real gingerbread. Next, students piped “icing” using lightweight spackle generously donated by The Home Depot, Alison Park.
This undertaking was part of 3D Art Class, a hands-on course offering students opportunities to work with clay, handmade paper, paper-clay, wire armature as well as other sculptural techniques. Ms. Ferris shares, “What stood out to me most about my students’ work was the pride they had in their community. They were highly engaged and motivated to represent their houses and businesses in a way that truly captured their essence. This motivation was evident in the attention to detail in their work. I am very proud of their endeavors!”
