Happy New Year

January 1, 2026

Dear Shaler Area Family,

As we welcome the New Year, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our students, families, staff, and community partners for the pride, dedication, and support you bring to Shaler Area each and every day. The start of a new year provides an important opportunity to reflect on our progress, celebrate shared successes, and look ahead with optimism and purpose. Across our district, there is strong momentum—and it is driven by our shared commitment to Engage, Empower, and Excel for every student.

As we begin the year ahead, I am proud to highlight several areas that reflect both our accomplishments and our priorities:

Celebrating Excellence and School Recognition
We are proud to celebrate notable achievements across our schools that reflect the strength of our programs and the dedication of our educators. Shaler Area Middle School was named a School to Watch, a prestigious recognition honoring excellence in academic achievement, developmental responsiveness, and organizational effectiveness. This designation reflects years of intentional work focused on student engagement, strong relationships, and a positive school culture.

Additionally, Marzolf Primary School earned a top ranking in the Niche Standout Elementary Schools list, highlighting the exceptional learning environment created through strong partnerships between students, staff, and families. These recognitions are a testament to the talent, care, and commitment present across the Shaler Area School District.

Advancing Student Learning and Achievement
Advancing student learning remains at the heart of our work. We are focused on engaging students in meaningful, high-quality learning experiences that promote critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application. Through strong instructional practices, curriculum alignment, and data-informed decision-making, our educators are continuously refining instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners.

In addition to academic growth, we recognize the vital role that performing arts, athletics, and extracurricular opportunities play in developing well-rounded students. Our music, theater, visual arts, and athletic programs provide students with opportunities to build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership—skills that extend far beyond the classroom. These experiences empower students to discover their passions and excel in all areas of school life.

Supporting the Whole Child
Student well-being continues to be a cornerstone of our district’s success. We are committed to creating inclusive, safe, and supportive learning environments, positive behavior supports, and access to comprehensive student services. When students feel a sense of belonging and support, they are better positioned to engage fully in learning and thrive both academically and personally.

Strengthening Community Connections and Planning for the Future
Shaler Area thrives because of strong partnerships with families and the broader community. As we continue implementing our strategic priorities and planning for the future—including facilities planning and program development—we remain committed to transparent communication and fiscally responsible decision-making that reflects our shared values and long-term vision.

As we look ahead to the new year, I invite you to join us for a Community Forum and Coffee & Conversation on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Marzolf Primary School, held in conjunction with our January evening District Parent Council (DPC) meeting. This session will provide an opportunity to share updates and progress related to our 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, gather feedback, and continue strengthening our partnership with families and the community.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. It is a tremendous honor to serve as Superintendent of the Shaler Area School District, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated students, staff, families, and community members. Together, we will continue to Engage, Empower, and Excel as we support our students and strengthen our schools. I wish you and your family a healthy, joyful, and successful New Year.

With Titan Pride,

Bryan E. O’Black, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
