Take 5 with Dr. O'BlackDecember 12, 2025

As we move through December, there is a renewed sense of excitement and energy throughout our schools and community. The joy of the holiday season is matched only by the enthusiasm of our students, staff, and families. Over the past few weeks, I have had the privilege of engaging with families during the many events held in our schools and throughout our community. From student performances and showcases to community gatherings, it has been heartwarming to see the pride and connection that defines the Shaler Area experience. It is this shared commitment to our students and one another that makes Shaler Area such a special place to learn, grow, and thrive. I am excited to share some recent highlights and upcoming events from across the district:

Shaler Area Showcase
The December edition of the Shaler Area Showcase was released on Wednesday! This monthly newsletter highlights important updates, district accomplishments, and upcoming events from across our schools. It serves as a key communication tool for families and the Shaler Area community. You can view the December Showcase by clicking here.

Shaler Area Middle School Named PA Schools to Watch
The Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education (PAMLE) has awarded Shaler Area Middle  the prestigious Schools to Watch designation.  This recognition is a celebration of the extraordinary work happening every day in our classrooms to support academic growth, social-emotional development, and the unique needs of adolescent learners. Over the past several years, the SAMS team has been unwavering in their commitment to strengthening middle-level practices, building strong relationships with students, and fostering a school culture where every child feels seen, valued, and capable of success.

This designation not only validates the tremendous progress that has been made, but also highlights Shaler Area Middle School as a model for districts across the Commonwealth.

I could not be more proud of Dr. Howard, Mr. Shaw, and every member of the middle school staff for their dedication to Engage, Empower, and Excel — and for creating a learning environment where students truly thrive. This honor is well-earned, and we are excited to continue advancing this important work together.

Shaler Area Primary Students Participate in Hour of Code

This week, Shaler Area Primary School students had the opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code, a global initiative to introduce students to computer science and coding. Through interactive, hands-on activities, students explored the basics of coding, problem-solving, and logical thinking. The Hour of Code is part of a larger effort to inspire interest in technology and STEM-related careers, and our students embraced the challenge with creativity and enthusiasm. We are proud of their hard work and excited to see how these foundational skills will support their learning in the future.

Staff Spotlight: Stephanie Strauss

The Shaler Area Board of School Directors has appointed Stephanie Strauss as the district’s next Director of Athletics, effective February 2026. This marks a significant and exciting step forward for Shaler Area as we continue to enhance opportunities for our student-athletes and strengthen Titan Athletics. Learn more here.

Student Spotlight: Marissa Miller

Marissa is a well rounded middle school student who consistently earns strong grades, performs at a high level in athletics, and participates in extracurricular clubs. Marissa belongs to the Latin Junior Classical League and the eighth-grade volleyball team that enjoyed an undefeated season last year. She consistently gives back to her community, including through service projects with Latin Junior Classical League and by volunteering her time helping run basketball tournaments for the youth program in the community. Thank you, Marissa, for being such a positive part of our school community at Shaler Area Middle School.
