Students Create Family Totem Poles as Capstone of Native American Unit

During the month of November, the third-grade students at Reserve focused on the Native American Culture in Social Studies. The students learned about the many tribes and leagues throughout the United States. The students also learned about the various homes and how the climate influenced the type of homes the Native Americans built.

They finished the Native American Unit with a totem pole activity with the collaboration of each student’s parent or grandparent working alongside their child making their own totem pole. The students select from a list of pictures of animals and other objects that describe different traits. The students select the ones that represent them and their family to create a totem pole for their family like a family crest. The unit and family event creating the totem poles was a great success, and everyone had an amazing time!
