Mrs. Mohr’s CHS Biology students were able to participate in a field trip to the University of Pittsburgh to perform a biotechnology lab. Through this hands-on educational lab experience, students determined whether food samples that they brought in (cookies, goldfish, chips, dog food) contained genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It was an authentic college-level lab that incorporated DNA extraction/purification, the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and Gel Electrophoresis. We are grateful that our students can benefit from enriching experiences like this with area labs.
