STEM Day Success at Scott Primary!

Scott Primary was filled with excitement as students engaged in a full day of hands-on STEM learning! Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive stations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, where they became designers, problem-solvers, and innovators.

Students explored force and motion by building and testing ramps and tracks, experimented with magnets and materials, and worked through engineering challenges that required creativity, teamwork, and perseverance. In math, they applied number sense and strategy through hands-on games and problem-solving activities, while in technology, students created animations and explored coding concepts that brought their ideas to life.

Across every station, students were actively thinking, collaborating, building, and revising, just like real engineers and scientists. Classrooms were filled with excitement as students tested ideas, learned from mistakes, and celebrated their successes together.

We were also excited to partner with ALCOSAN Outreach, who provided students with hands-on experiences in environmental literacy aligned to PA STEELS, helping them better understand stormwater, sustainability, and real-world environmental solutions.

All experiences were intentionally connected to PA STEELS standards, while also reinforcing important skills in ELA and Math, including communication, reasoning, and critical thinking. Students weren’t just learning, they were applying their knowledge in meaningful, real-world ways.

This incredible day was made possible through a STEM and Portrait in Practice Grant, supporting Shaler Area’s vision of developing students who reflect the Portrait of a Graduate as critical thinkers, collaborators, communicators, and innovators ready for the future.

“This event was made possible by the exceptional work of Ms. Cari Kelm, who wrote a grant and thoughtfully organized the entire day. Her leadership, vision, and attention to detail resulted in an engaging experience where students explored force and motion, experimented with magnets, tackled engineering challenges, and applied math and technology skills in creative and authentic ways. Students were actively thinking, collaborating, and problem-solving—truly embodying the role of young engineers and scientists,” shared Cindy Foht, Principal of Scott Primary School.

A huge thank you to our amazing teachers and support staff for their flexibility, energy, and support in making the day such a success. Days like today remind us that learning can be hands-on, engaging, and unforgettable. Our students rose to the challenge and absolutely SHINED!
