Take 5 with Dr. O’Black — March 6

March 6, 2026

Dear Shaler Area Families,

As we step into March, there is a noticeable sense of momentum across our schools. From our primary classrooms to our high school pathways, students are engaged in meaningful learning experiences that are preparing them not just for the next grade level — but for the opportunities that lie well beyond graduation.

What continues to stand out is the energy in our buildings. Students are asking thoughtful questions, collaborating with peers, exploring new ideas, and embracing challenges with determination. Whether they are mastering foundational skills, performing on stage, competing in athletics, or exploring career pathways, our students are demonstrating the habits of lifelong learners.

This progress does not happen by chance. It is the result of intentional instruction, supportive relationships, and a shared commitment to high expectations. Our educators create environments where students feel safe to take risks and grow. Our families reinforce the importance of effort, responsibility, and character. And our students rise to the occasion, showing resilience and pride in being part of Shaler Area.

I also want to remind families that our March Coffee & Conversation will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at Shaler Area Middle School from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., followed by our monthly District Parent Council meeting. These gatherings provide a valuable opportunity to connect, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the work happening across our district. I hope you will consider joining us.

Celebrating National School Breakfast Week!
This week, we celebrated National School Breakfast Week, highlighting the importance of a nutritious start to the school day. We want to remind families that school breakfast is free for all students at all Shaler Area schools. Ensuring that students have access to a healthy meal in the morning supports learning, focus, and overall well-being.

Staff Spotlight: Dawn Vaugn
Effectively communicating with students why drugs are a destructive path requires intentionality, thoughtfulness, and creativity. Dawn Vaughn, health & physical education teacher at Shaler Area Middle School, invites students to reflect on their own life and articulate their own reason not to abuse substances. Students determine their “WHY”—the reason (or reasons) they will try their best not to become wrapped up in drug abuse and addiction. After this reflection, students anonymously write their “why” on a post-it note and stick it to the board in the back of the room.  Their “whys” stay there all year long, reminding them what is important in their life and what can be ruined or affected if they give into the pressures to experiment with drugs. Thank you, Ms. Vaughn, for your care and insight as you encourage students to make healthy life choices.
