6th graders at Shaler Area Elementary School had the privilege of hearing Holocaust Generations Speaker Lynne Ravas share her father’s story. Her father, Hans Frank (later Fred Rosenbaum), escaped Germany as a young child through adoption by a Jewish couple in the Bronx in 1939.
Mrs. Ravas’ presentation connected to the 6th grade novel study of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, helping students deepen their understanding of the novel’s themes through a real-life account.
As part of this learning experience, students also participated in The Butterfly Project, a worldwide remembrance initiative, painting butterflies to remember the children whose lives were lost and create a more peaceful future.
This special day of learning was made possible through the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, the Mark Schonwetter Holocaust Education Foundation, and the LIGHT Initiative.
