Take 5 with Dr. O’Black — January 9

January 9, 2026

Dear Shaler Area Families:

As we begin a new year, our schools continue to be filled with moments that remind us why the Shaler Area community is so special. Throughout the past several weeks, our buildings have been alive with music, creativity, and celebration—showcasing the talents, joy, and pride of our students and staff. From classroom visits and student performances to school and community events, it has been energizing to witness the connections that make our district such a vibrant place to learn and grow. This shared commitment to our students and to one another remains at the heart of who we are, and it sets a strong foundation as we move forward together in the year ahead.

January Coffee & Conversation, DPC and Community Forum
Thank you to the many families and community members who joined us for our January Coffee & Conversation, District Parent Council meeting, and Community Forum at Marzolf Primary School. Your time, thoughtful questions, and engagement are essential as we continue advancing the Shaler Area School District’s work together.

During the forum, we shared updates on the implementation of our 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, highlighted early progress across our priority areas, and gathered valuable feedback to help inform next steps. These conversations strengthen our partnership with families and ensure our work remains aligned with the needs of our students and community.

For those who were unable to attend—or who would like to revisit the discussion—the presentation shared during the Community Forum is available by clicking here.

We are grateful for your continued involvement and look forward to ongoing dialogue as we move forward together.

Be Prepared for Inclement Weather
As the temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to refamiliarize yourself with procedures for school delays or closings and ensure you have a plan in place in the event of inclement weather. Read more by visiting the district website.

Deven Wilson’s Search for a Kidney Donor Featured in Forbes
Shaler Area High School senior Deven Wilson has one holiday wish: a kidney. Deven’s search for a living donor was recently featured in an article in Forbes magazine. Learn more about Deven’s story in the article and consider how you can help here.

Student Spotlight: Duncan Simmons
Shaler Area High School student Duncan Simmons has successfully battled leukemia. When offered a life-changing experience from Make-A-Wish, Duncan didn’t select a Caribbean vacation or a bedroom makeover. He wanted to give back to children and teens still facing the challenges of treatment. Duncan partnered with Make-A-Wish and the UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation to create Duncan’s Diner, which provides hospitalized pediatric oncology patients with meal delivery gift cards, empowering them to have choice to have familiar and enticing comfort foods during treatment. Thank you, Duncan, for your exemplary service and care. Read more in the Trib.

Staff Spotlight: Ashley Ferguson
Ashley Ferguson, Learning Support Teacher at Burchfield Primary School, demonstrates patience, inclusivity, and kindness throughout the day. She is an advocate for her students and creates a positive classroom environment for her students, parents, and supporting adults. She is just one of the many examples of why the Burchfield community is blessed to have such a great staff.
