As the calendar turns toward winter break, our schools and community are filled with moments that remind us why this season is so meaningful. In recent weeks, our buildings have come alive with music, creativity, and celebration, reflecting the joy and pride shared by our students, staff, and families. Whether attending student performances, visiting classrooms, or participating in community events, it has been inspiring to see the strong sense of connection that defines the Shaler Area School District. This shared dedication to our students and to one another is at the heart of what makes Shaler Area a place where learning and belonging go hand in hand.

January Coffee & Conversation, DPC and Community Forum
As we look ahead to the new year, I invite you to join us for a Community Forum and Coffee & Conversation on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Marzolf Primary School, held in conjunction with our January evening District Parent Council (DPC) meeting. This session will provide an opportunity to share updates and progress related to our 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, gather feedback, and continue strengthening our partnership with families and the community.
Marzolf Primary School Recognized as #2 Standout Elementary Schools in Pittsburgh
The Shaler Area School District is honored to announce that Marzolf Primary School has been ranked #2 in the 2026 Niche Standout Elementary Schools in Pittsburgh. This recognition reflects that Shaler Area schools are on the forefront of education, providing students with an outstanding education that empowers them to excel. The caliber of our instruction stands out not only in our city, but in our region, with Marzolf ranked #8 Niche Standout Elementary Schools for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The 2026 Niche Standout Elementary Schools list recognizes public schools that are making a significant difference in their community. It is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents, using data from the U.S. Department of Education. Ranking factors include school diversity and state test scores for economically disadvantaged students.
Deven Wilson’s Search for a Kidney Donor Featured in Forbes

Staff Spotlight: Janice “Sissy” Myers
Sissy has been safely transporting Shaler Area students for almost 30 years. Her friendly smile welcomes our students from the first day of kindergarten to their last day of high school. Her kindness makes every trip a little brighter. Thank you for going the extra mile!
Student Spotlight: Audrey Ertl
Audrey Ertl is a fifth-grade student at Shaler Area Middle School and the winner of our holiday card design contest. Audrey’s entry captured the warmth and cheer of the holidays. We are grateful for this opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of our students and are so glad that Audrey shared her festive artwork with us.
