Student journalists from Shaler Area High School are being recognized for their work.
Each year Robert Morris hosts a spring media contest entered by dozens of high schools from all over the area. There are four print journalism categories (news, sports, features and opinions). Shaler students took “Best in Category” in 2 of those 4.
Rylin Kinzel won the Feature Story award for her story on Heather Martin, a survivor of the Columbine massacre in 1999.
Jackson Waruszewski won the Sports Story award for his story on Greg Kampe, Oakland University men’s basketball coach.
Students also won accolades in the state-wide contest hosted by the PA Press Club. Submissions were judged by working and retired journalists associated with the club. Both Rylin and Jackson’s work mentioned above were given Honorable Mention in the Feature Story category.
In the Environment category – Jackson was awarded 2nd place for “Sustainability students contribute to another land conservation project.”
and Emma Conway won 3rd place for “Shaler Area student contribute to shape Rainbow Raccoon Park.”
In the Sports category, 2024 grad Brady McGuire won 2nd place for his story on Bryan Rincon.
Congratulations to each of these journalists! We are proud of your work in the Oracle and delighted you are being celebrated!
