District to Implement OpenGate Weapons Detection System

An official message of the office of the Superintendent of the SASD
A message from the Superintendent

April 10, 2025

Dear Shaler Area Colleagues,

At the April 9, 2025, meeting of the Shaler Area Board of School Directors, the Board approved the administration’s recommendation to implement the OpenGate Weapons Detection System at Shaler Area Middle School and Shaler Area High School beginning with the 2025–2026 school year.

This decision reflects our district’s ongoing commitment to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The OpenGate system is a state-of-the-art weapons detection solution that enhances building security while minimizing disruption to the school day. Unlike traditional metal detectors, OpenGate units allow for rapid, contactless screening, enabling a smooth and efficient entry process for students and staff each morning.

The selection of this system followed a comprehensive review of school safety protocols, evolving security technologies, site visits and consultation with security experts and district stakeholders. The OpenGate system is currently being used in schools, stadiums, and public venues across the country and has been proven effective in identifying potential threats while maintaining a welcoming school atmosphere.

In addition to the OpenGate system, the district is actively reviewing additional security measures to further strengthen the safety of our school campuses. These measures will be shared with our school community when appropriate, while maintaining the confidentiality necessary to uphold the overall security posture of our schools.

To help familiarize families with the OpenGate system, we have included a link to a sample video demonstration showcasing how the technology works in a school setting.

In the coming months, we will work closely with school administrators, staff, and families to prepare for the system’s implementation. This includes staff training, communication with students and families, and pilot testing of the equipment prior to full deployment in August 2025.

We remain committed to proactive measures that promote a safe and supportive school community. Thank you for your continued partnership as we prioritize the well-being of every student in the Shaler Area School District.

With Titan Pride,

Bryan E. O’Black, Ed.D.
