December 6, 2024
Dear Shaler Area Families,
As we transition from November into December, I am continually inspired by the dedication, collaboration, and accomplishments that define our Shaler Area community. The holiday season brings an opportunity to reflect on all we’ve achieved together and to focus on the important work ahead as we continue supporting our students and families. I’m excited to share some recent highlights and upcoming events from across the district:
School Board Reorganization
On Wednesday, December 4, the Shaler Area School District held its annual School Board Reorganization meeting. During this meeting, the Board elected its new leadership for the upcoming year. I am pleased to announce that James Tunstall has been elected as School Board President, and Eileen Phillips as School Board Vice President. We extend our gratitude to the outgoing leadership team for their service and commitment, and we look forward to continuing our work together to support our students and the Shaler Area community.
Appointment of New Director of Finance & Operations
On Wednesday, December 4, the Board appointed Jennifer Tressler as the new Director of Finance and Operations, effective February 2, 2025. Ms. Tressler is a Certified Public Accountant with over 17 years of financial experience, including 11 years in school districts.
Currently serving as Chief Financial Officer and Board Treasurer at Duquesne City School District, Ms. Tressler manages financial planning, budgeting, auditing, and compliance with grant requirements, along with payroll, purchasing, and the food service program. She also has a strong background in long-term financial viability planning.
Ms. Tressler will replace Ms. Sherri Jaffee, who is retiring after 8 years of dedicated service to the Shaler Area School District. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Jaffee for her commitment and contributions to the district and wish her all the best in her retirement.
We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Tressler to the Shaler Area team and look forward to her leadership in this vital role.
Be Prepared for Inclement Weather
As the temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to refamiliarize yourself with procedures for school delays or closings and ensure you have a plan in place in the event of inclement weather. Read more by visiting the district website.
FBI Presentation on Online Safety
The district recently collaborated with the FBI to provide an important educational opportunity for Shaler Area High School students, focused on the dangers of online exploitation. This presentation highlighted critical safety measures and strategies to help students navigate the digital world responsibly and protect themselves from potential online threats. The initiative aligns with the district’s commitment to fostering a safe and informed school community. Click here to view a recently published video from FBI Pittsburgh.
Goal Spotlight: Strengthening School Leadership & Communication
One of our district’s goals for the 2024–2025 school year is Strengthening School Leadership & Communication. Our goal is to foster collaboration and maintain open lines of communication with all families, staff, and community members to ensure we move forward together toward excellence.
One of the ways we’re achieving this is through our new monthly newsletter, the Shaler Area Showcase, which launched last month. This newsletter highlights important updates, accomplishments, and upcoming events across the district, ensuring families and community members stay informed and connected.
