Take 5 with Dr. O’Black — February 6

February 6, 2026

Dear Shaler Area Families:

It was great to welcome our students back to in-person learning following last week’s unprecedented snowstorm. We are truly grateful to our families for your understanding, patience, and support as we navigated challenging conditions with safety as our top priority.

This week has been a strong reminder of what makes Shaler Area such a special place to learn and grow. Across the district, students were engaged in meaningful learning, staff went above and beyond to support them, and our schools were once again buzzing with activity, creativity, and collaboration.

These everyday moments—both big and small—reflect a community deeply committed to its children and to one another. Thank you for your continued partnership and for the trust you place in our schools as we work together to support the success of every student.

As a reminder, due to the use of Flexible Instructional Days (FID)/Remote Learning Days, Shaler Area School District will still observe Spring Break from March 30–April 2, 2026.

Student Spotlight: Matthew Britenbaugh
Shaler Area High School student Matthew Britenbaugh has been awarded a full-ride scholarship to Theil College. Matthew shows leadership in the classroom and through extracurriculars. He is an active member of marching band, in theater, a member of English Honors Society, Art National Honors Society and Tri-Music National Honors Society, and is an Eagle Scout. Congratulations, Matthew. We know you will continue to serve and to lead in your collegiate career just as you do in Shaler Area.

National School Counselor Week
This week, we proudly recognize National School Counselor Week and extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated school counselors across the Shaler Area School District. Our counselors play a vital role in supporting the academic success, social-emotional well-being, and future readiness of our students. Through their compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment, they help students navigate challenges, set goals, and discover their strengths—often serving as trusted advocates and steady supports during pivotal moments in a child’s life.

Thank you to our school counselors for the meaningful impact you make every day. Your work truly embodies our commitment to Engage, Empower, and Excel, and our entire community is stronger because of you.

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Tara Wells
Mrs. Tara Wells, from the high school’s Family & Consumer Science Department, plays a unique and impactful role by running the high school preschool program. Each day, she teaches two groups at once—our preschool students and the high school “instructors,” guiding teens in child development, leadership, and hands-on teaching skills. She creates a warm, positive learning environment for everyone involved, and her program is so well-regarded that many of our own staff members have entrusted her with their children’s first school experience.

Looking Ahead
There will be no school on Monday, February 16 in observance of Presidents’ Day.
