Titan Trail Information

The Titan Trail: A Reading Adventure is a school-wide reading incentive program developed by the staff at Shaler Area Elementary School.

Goals:
  • Motivate students to read at their independent reading levels to reach a goal of reading at least 18 books a year.
  • Encourage students to value practice as an essential part of achieving success by linking growth in physical fitness with growth in academic fitness.
  • Build a sense of community within the school as well as connections to the larger communities within the Shaler Area School District.
Tracking:

After reading a book, students complete a comprehension quiz using the Accelerated Reading software. Classrooms have charts for students to record their progress. Pacing charts are posted throughout the school to be sure students are keeping pace.

Fund-raising:

Our main fundraiser for this event is our family friendly 5k race entitled “Run for the Titan Trail”, that occurs in the spring. In addition, we have various dine to donate nights that support this program.

Incentives:

All students have a goal of reading at least 18 books. Accomplishing the goal allows students to attend the end of the year celebration at Millvale Riverfront Park.

There are individual, classroom, and cross grade level incentives to keep student motivation high throughout the year.

In addition, students that read a million words or more are invited to participate in our Million Word Reader celebration.
