Recap and Reminders for Parents — May 23

May 23, 2025

Dear Shaler Area Families,

With just one week remaining in the school year, the energy across our schools continues to be inspiring. This time of year brings a vibrant blend of celebration, reflection, and anticipation as our students participate in final performances, athletic competitions, award ceremonies, and meaningful end-of-year traditions.

We are incredibly proud of all that our students have accomplished and grateful for the dedication of our educators and staff who have guided them throughout the year. We also want to extend our sincere thanks to our staff and parent volunteers for their tremendous efforts in planning and supporting these special events—they make these memorable experiences possible for our students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support—it plays a vital role in the success of our school community. Let’s finish the year strong as we continue to Engage, Empower, and Excel together.

Shaler Area High School Mock Crash Recap
Earlier today, Shaler Hampton EMS, in collaboration with the Emergency Responder class at Shaler Area High School, hosted a mock car crash event designed to give students a powerful, hands-on learning experience.

The simulation allowed students to apply their training in a realistic emergency scenario while emphasizing the importance of safe decision-making. Special thanks to Shaler Hampton EMS; Cherry City, Bauerstown, and Undercliff Fire Companies; the Shaler, Millvale, and Etna Police Departments; Life Flight; the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office; and Perman Funeral Home for their invaluable support and partnership in making this educational opportunity possible for our students.

GATE Students Earn 2nd Place in Fairchild Challenge
Shaler Area High School’s GATE students placed 2nd overall in this year’s Fairchild Challenge, earning a $500 grant to support our program. We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication and creativity throughout the year—excelling in research, writing, and artistic expression.

The Fairchild Challenge is a free, multidisciplinary environmental education program designed to engage students in exploring real-world environmental issues. Developed by the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami and adopted locally by Phipps Conservatory in 2008, the program encourages students to devise imaginative and effective responses to complex environmental problems through a series of interdisciplinary challenges.

This year, Grace Grabowski, Braiden Bartkins, and Abby Maher proudly represented Shaler Area at the awards ceremony, along with Mrs. Elder. Their efforts—and those of all our GATE participants. Congratulations to all involved.

Last week, members of the Shaler Area High School Sustainability Club attended the National Green School Society Induction Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. These students truly exemplify what it means to Engage, Empower, Excel!

Shaler Area Middle School Ecology Trip to Beechwood Farms
Shaler Area Middle School students recently explored environmental science during a field trip to Beechwood Farms. They studied deer populations, surveyed tree species, and assessed pond health through macroinvertebrate sampling.

Students discovered an overpopulation of deer, identified Red Oak and Hickory as dominant trees, and found the pond to be in “Fair” health—impacted by invasive goldfish. It was a meaningful day of hands-on learning that deepened students’ understanding of local ecosystems and conservation.
