In February, Shaler Area Elementary School welcomed Lynne Ravas, a former teacher and Holocaust Generations speaker, to present to sixth-grade students.
Leading up to the presentation, students read and discussed the novel Number the Stars. Ms. Ravas shared with students and then opened the floor for a Q & A session.
Following Lynne Ravas’ presentation, students participated in The Butterfly Project, painting ceramic butterflies as part of a Holocaust remembrance activity. These butterflies will be displayed as a permanent art installation in our building.
This special day of learning was made possible through the collaboration of the LIGHT Initiative, The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, and the Mark Schonwetter Holocaust Education Foundation. You can learn more about the Generations Speakers program on The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh’s website.
