School District

As we prepare for another exciting school year, we’re excited to share some new updates that will make learning even better for our students. At Shaler Area, we provide a strong education that helps our students succeed in a constantly changing world. This year, we’re making some important changes to our curriculum to ensure our students gain the essential skills they need to thrive.

Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

We are excited to bring artificial intelligence (AI) tools into our classrooms. AI helps teachers personalize lessons, making learning more interactive and tailored to each student’s needs. This approach encourages critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving—key skills for all students. Our partnership with Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3 also helps align our efforts with career readiness, preparing every student for future opportunities.

To support our teachers, we are offering Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) focused on AI training. These PLCs allow teachers to collaborate, share best practices, and improve their teaching strategies. By equipping our teachers with the latest AI tools and techniques, we enhance their ability to deliver personalized and effective instruction.

Illustrative Mathematics for Primary Grades

We are excited to introduce Illustrative Mathematics for K-3 students. This new math program will help your child build a strong foundation in math, making it easier to succeed as they move to higher grades.

Why Illustrative Mathematics?

Strong Foundation: This program helps kids understand basic math concepts, setting them up for future success.

Analytical Skills: It teaches kids to think about the ‘why’ behind math problems, helping them understand and remember better.

Problem-Solving: The program includes fun activities that challenge kids and build their problem-solving skills.

Smooth Progression: Consistent teaching methods ensure a smooth transition from one grade to the next.

Love for Learning: We aim to make math enjoyable, inspiring a lasting love for learning in our students.

Using Illustrative Mathematics K-8 enhances our students’ math education and supports the broader goals of the Shaler Area School District. We believe this program will help develop well-rounded, enthusiastic learners ready for future challenges.

PA STEELS

To prepare for the full implementation of PDE’s PA STEELS standards in 2026, we are training our science teachers and piloting new science materials from OpenSciEd and Twig Science. Our teachers will participate in professional development focused on NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) methods to deliver engaging science lessons that foster a love for science.

This year, we will use NGSS-aligned materials from Twig Science and OpenSciEd. These programs offer hands-on, inquiry-based learning that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Students will enjoy experiments, collaborative projects, and real-world problem-solving activities.

These pilot programs and teacher trainings are essential steps in preparing for the PA STEELS standards, which focus on science, technology, engineering, and environmental literacy. Starting this preparation now ensures our students are ready for success in college, careers, and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making Shaler Area School District a place where every student can thrive. These updates reflect our commitment to providing an education that goes beyond traditional academics. By integrating AI, adopting the PA STEELS standards, and implementing Illustrative Mathematics, we are ensuring our students develop the skills and mindset outlined in our Portrait of a Graduate. We believe these enhancements will not only enrich their learning experience but also equip them with the tools needed for future success.
